Example 1
I give a book to the woman.
indirect object: to the woman
Nominative: die Frau (singular) = the woman
die Frau belongs to group b
indirect object: der Frau
complete phrase: Ich schenke der Frau ein Buch

Example 2
I give money to the child.
indirect object: to the child
Nominative: das Kind (singular) = the child
das Kind belongs to group c
indirect object: dem Kind
complete phrase: Ich gebe dem Kind Geld.

Example 3
I give money to the children.
indirect object: to the children
Nominative: die Kinder (plural) = the children
das Kind belongs to group c
indirect object: den Kindern
complete phrase: Ich gebe den Kindern Geld.

Example 4
I lend the car to the bricklayer.
indirect object: to the bricklayer
Nominative: der Maurer (singular) = the bricklayer
