As we have discussed already in 21.2.1 wollen also mögen describes a desire. Actually it is used exactly like the verb to like. The conjunctive is used to express an alternative to to want to.

  mögen - wollen

Ich möchte ein Brot <=> Ich will ein Brot.
= I would like bread. <=> I want bread.
Möchtest du das Buch lesen? <=> Willst Du das Buch lesen?
= Would you like to read the book? <=> Do you want to read the book.
Er möchte es nicht. <=> Er will es nicht.
= He doesn't like it. <=> He doesn't want it.
Wir möchten ihm etwas schenken. <=> Wir wollen ihm etwas schenken.
= We would like to give him something. <=> We want to give him something.
Ihr möchtet ins Kino gehen. <=> Ihr wollt ins Kino.
= You would like to go to the movies. <=> You want to go to the movies.
Sie möchten es tun. <=> Sie wollen es tun.
= They would like to do it. <=> They want to do it.

mögen to express doubts

Then there is another meaning of mögen that might be a bit confusing. Mögen is used to express doubts and possibilities. The English translation would be then to may.
Mag sein, dass er reich ist, aber trotzdem ist er unsympathisch.
= Maybe that he is rich, but still he is unpleasant.
In this sense the verb können (to can) is used as synonym.
Mag sein, dass er arm ist, aber er ist großzügig. = Maybe that he is poor, but he is generous.
Kann sein, dass er arm ist, aber er ist großzügig. = Maybe he is poor, but he is generous.

 mögen as full verb

Apart from being a modal verb mögen is also a full verb with the same meaning as to like as a full verb.
Ich mag Kirschen.
= I like cherries.
